Tekst:Josip Josef Mayer
Pogotovo kada uzmemo u obzir i sve veći povratak naših iseljenika, jer ni zemlje poput SAD-a više nisu obećane zemlje kakvima su nekoć bile.
A tko
radile? Što o hrvatskom iseljeništvu uče djeca u školama? Znaju li koje sve
grane dijaspore postoje, gdje naši ljudi žive – od Europe do dalekih oceanskih
zemalja – i kako žive?
lišena političkih podjela, i prilagođena realnostima 21. stoljeća. Strategija u

CROATIA
COULD DO BETTER – IF OUR POLITICIANS HAD MORE GOODWILL AND WORK ETHIC
We are
living in challenging times – facing the risks of new pandemics, rising costs
of living, and the shadow of potential wars, including the ongoing conflict in
Ukraine and other global tensions. In such a climate, Croatia must act wisely
and responsibly, especially as more and more of our people from the diaspora
begin returning home. Countries like the United States are no longer seen as
lands of opportunity, with both the wealthy and the poor seeking better lives
elsewhere.
Given all
this, it is unacceptable – and frankly absurd – that the Croatian diaspora has
been neglected for over thirty years. Who is responsible for that? Significant
effort, time, and money have been invested in conferences, meetings, and
lectures over the years – yet the results are minimal. Both the homeland and
the diaspora have been left short-changed.
To this
day, Croatian citizens abroad still cannot vote easily via mail or online –
something many modern democracies already solved long ago.
These circumstances
raise many serious questions.
One key
question is: what exact strategy have Croatian governments – past and present –
been using when it comes to the diaspora? Do children in Croatian schools even
learn about the diaspora, its diversity, and its global presence – from Europe
to the Americas to Oceania?
Let’s not forget: the first diaspora strategy proposed by the Social Democratic Party, drafted by Goldstein under the title Strategy for Reviving Croatian Emigration and Minorities Abroad, was quietly sent back for revision – and then never saw the light of day.
Isn’t it
time to finally come together – with the help of artificial intelligence, the
Marshall Plan for Croatia initiative, and the support of both domestic and
diaspora-based Croatian organizations – to create a new, effective, and
future-oriented National Strategy for the Croatian Diaspora and Minorities
Abroad?
A strategy
that is transparent, inclusive, and forward-looking – and not burdened by
political divisions or outdated attitudes. One that welcomes everyone who
carries Croatia in their heart, no matter where they live.
Because yes
– Croatia can do better. But only if our leaders show more goodwill, work
together, and truly respect all Croatians – at home and around the world.
